Did you know your gut microbiome is unique to you?
No two people’s microbiomes will have the same bacteria in the same ratios! And each bacteria has a different function, making studies on gut health challenging. However, research on the subject is blossoming lately, and we have some amazing results!
The gut bacteria carry out reactions that human enzymes can’t do on their own, which are necessary for:
1. Nutrient absorption and food fermentation
2. Stimulation of the immune system
3. Protection against pathogens
4. Modulation of Central Nervous System pathways
The two main phylum of bacteria found in humans are Bacteriotedes and Firmicutes. It’s been found that obese humans have a higher ratio of F:B, while lean individuals have a higher ratio of B:F. Firmicutes has also been associated with chronic inflammation, and different microbial ratios are related to the regulation of anxiety, mood, cognition, and pain.
Interestingly, the dominance of a certain population of bacteria is strongly related to diet.
We’ll discuss the effects of diet on the gut microbiome in my next post!
